Additionally, hot water radiators use a two-pipe system, with one pipe acting as an inlet which allows hot water to enter and the other pipe as an outlet that lets water back out.

Water is heated in a central boiler, and once it reaches the desired temperature, it then gets distributed to all radiators inside a building. As water goes through the various radiators, it will eventually lose its heat until it becomes inefficient to heat up a radiator. Once this happens, it will be returned to the heater for reheating.

Design Considerations

 

During the designing process, there are several considerations we have to keep in mind in order to create a comprehensive and efficient design for your hot water radiator. Mainly, we take these things into account:

Comfort

To ensure your comfort, we start by assessing the following factors:

  • Room temperature – heating systems are designed for room temperatures between 18-20 degrees Celsius, and it could vary depending on your needs.
  • Downdraught – the presence of downdraught can affect a radiator’s heating efficiency and provide you with less comfortable heating. It often occurs near window areas, considering that these are places with the lowest temperatures within a room. However, any other area that has a lower temperature than that of the room can cause downdraught. A well-designed hot water radiator, particularly one which is installed below the windows, can remove downdraught and even prevent it from occurring in the first place.
  • Temperature variations – any surface within your room that have a lower temperature will provide a lower comfort level compared to areas with fewer cold surfaces. This is mainly due to radiant heat. There are two ways to improve this: one is to improve the insulation, and the other is to raise the room temperature. Ideally, your room should be properly insulated, and the same can be done to your gable walls.
  • Ventilation – proper ventilation is necessary to remove any impurities like odor, particles, and moisture which can affect a radiator’s heating efficiency. This can be possible by briefly opening the window to provide ventilation for a short period of time. However, you can also take extra measures by insulating your windows.
  • Heat distribution – typically, all rooms within a building should have the same room temperature. If there is no insulation in the roof and gable walls, rooms with more cold surfaces should have a higher room temperature in order to maintain the same level of comfort.
  • Wind – during windy conditions, air changes in a room could affect its room temperature. In order to maintain the room temperature at the set level, it is necessary to introduce a higher flow temperature toward the radiators.

 

Control

Maximum comfort within the rooms of your building will require proper control. Needless to say, in order to achieve comfortable heating conditions, control over the heating supply is required. Controls can be categorized into the following:

  • Flow and return temperature control – typically, you need to adjust the flow temperature in accordance with the outdoor temperature using a weather compensator via a control and supervision system. By setting the flow temperature, you’ll allow the worst located thermostatic valve to have good heat authority, resulting in more efficient heating. A return temperature which is too high can be easily offset by increasing the flow temperature.
  • Domestic hot water control – maintaining a constant outgoing temperature is necessary. To ensure this, a control valve is regulated via an electronic control which could be placed to the weather compensator or installed separately. It can also be achieved by using self-acting controls. Return temperature coming from the heat exchanger for domestic water must be kept below 60 degrees Celsius.
  • Room temperature control – the presence of thermostatic valves in every radiator allows you to control room temperature. Ideally, you want to keep the room temperature at a higher level when there are sick or elderly persons in your house. A thermostatic valve that has a built-in thermostat is preferred.

 

Operating conditions
  • Temperature levels – large-sized radiators are required if there’s a lower flow temperature. Ideally, a lower flow temperature is necessary if it won’t affect your desired room temperature as it can enhance comfort levels by lowering the temperature differential between the surfaces of the rooms. Two-pipe systems require flow temperature to be constant across all radiators as long as the system will function properly. It’s normally set at a certain level that allows the last thermostatic valve to provide good heat authority.
  • Static pressure – static pressure is essential for making sure that all parts within a heating system are filled with water.
  • Water quality – water quality used in the secondary system should be the same as the one applied for the primary system. Water must always be present, even when there are breaks in operation. Even during repairs, only those parts which have been affected should be emptied, and any possible leaks must be repaired immediately.
  • Return temperature – the ideal return temperature is similar to the required primary return temperature. While the calculated value is at 70 degrees Celsius, it is more preferable to strive for a temperature lower than that. This can only be achieved by opting for a two-pipe system.
