What is Standpipe Design?

Installation of Standpipes

  • Class II: this class requires 1 ½ inch of the hose connection. Such pipes are found in many places such as cabinets in the buildings. They are best suited to be used by trained personnel on site. Firefighters can also use them
  • Class III : is actually a hybrid of Class I and II as all those hose connection requirements are included. All these classifications are in accordance with the International Building Code Section 905.3.1. Have you heard about this section before? The choice does not end here. You still have to choose between automatic, manual, dry, wet, or semiautomatic standpipe systems.

Types of Standpipe Designs

In addition to the standpipe classification, we have types of these designs. Knowing these designs will help you make the right choice. The types of standpipes include the following:

  • Wet standpipes : these ones, like wet sprinkler systems, are always literally wet with water ready for a discharge in a moment’s notice. Such systems are beneficial in a warmer environment where the pipes will not be affected by extremely cold conditions to the extent of freezing with water.
  • Automatic standpipes : the valve opens first to discharge at a preset pressure and flow rate. As in the name, these are automatic and thus synchronize with automatic fire detectors.
  • Manual dry standpipes : these types are for the fire department to use as they need their pumper to provide the required water pressure.
  • Automatic dry standpipes : these types have water in the piping network when the system is in use
  • Semiautomatic standpipes : these ones are a hybrid between manual and automatic standpipe systems. The control device or the fire pump has to be activated for this system to provide the necessary water pressure.

Where are Standpipes Required?

Note that standpipe systems are not necessarily applied or needed in any building. This is perhaps the main difference between these systems and sprinklers which are virtually needed in all buildings. A single floor building, for instance, may not need the standpipes. Large buildings 30 feet tall are relevant candidates for the design, installation, and maintenance of standpipes.

Standpipes are installed in accordance with the IBC 905.3 “Required Installations”. This standard stipulates precisely what requirements are per the class of these systems.   • Should be installed in covered and open mall buildings
  • Should be installed in boatyards and marinas

  • Should be installed in buildings that have the stage greater than 1000 square feet
  • Should also be installed in buildings that have the assembly occupancy with the load exceeding 1000

How Often Should You Maintain The Standpipes?

Standpipes should be maintained on scheduled intervals to ensure their continued efficiency. NFPA 25 (Standard for Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance of Water-based Fire Protection Systems) requires these standpipes to be monitored on a regular basis. There should first be the identification of the important components of these pipes. For example, valves and connections should be labeled as such to eliminate confusion when the need to use them arise. will accomplish such requirements.
