What Is A Standby Generator?

Standby Generator Design

A standby generator is a special kind of electrical equipment that operates automatically and used as a back-up electrical system in case of power loss/failure. The power losses are sensed by special sensors placed within the system. Once an outage is detected, the generator automatically turns on to make up for the power loss.

This transfer of electrical load from the main power supply to generator is instantaneous. Once the generator kicks in, it provides sufficient electrical energy to the circuits. And once the power failure or outage is dealt with, the smart sensors shift the load to the main power supply back again.

Mostly electric generators are run on diesel, natural gas or propane gas. While the generators which run on diesel are much more efficient, the natural gas generators provide much more versatility and reliability.

Why Do You Need a Standby Generator?

Generator Exhaust

A standby generator will definitely do wonders with the power system in the building or even a factory. It can save equipment or electrical appliances from several power surges. They also help keep the building safe from electrical mishaps in the case of power failures or violent power and voltage surges.

Listed below are some of the few advantages it provides:

  • Automatically turns on when power fails.
  • Provides instantaneous power to the entire circuitry.
  • Fuel autonomy lasts for almost a week or two.
  • When utility lines or the main power supply fails, you can instantly get uninterrupted and continuous power.
  • If the power returns but the voltage is unstable or unusual, the standby generator automatically senses it and does not transfer load.
  • There is no setup procedure involved during an outage or any other emergency.
  • Standby generators do not produce a lot of noise when in operation
  • They run on fuel which is easily available or gas which can be directly piped to it.
  • The critical or crucial circuitry can be isolated from the utility lines when there is a power outage to prevent unusual power surges.

Types of Standby Generator Design Offered by NYE

Standby Generator Design

Permanent Standby Generators Design : A permanent standby generator from NY Engineers is perhaps one of the most reliable and durable kinds of generator design. The generators can effectively detect when the power fails or when there are anomalies in the power and provide the alternative almost instantly. These are fitted into the building or a room where they sit and wait for a power outage

Because they are permanent, a suitable refueling design advantage to these generators. Most homeowners or companies get a fuel pipe installed directly to the generator that allows the generator to refuel without human intervention. This design allows company owners and homeowners to feel safe and comfortable without having to worry about refueling every now and then. It is especially reliable when there is an outage or a storm and there is either a shortage of fuel or the conditions outside are not favorable for a drive.

While these are the most powerful, efficient and, reliable generators, they can also prove to be rather expensive to install, however.

Portable Generators Design : Portable generators are the next option for those who cannot afford permanent generators or would like to have the benefits that come with portable generators. Portable generators can do almost everything which a permanent generator does. Except, these generators are not connected to a fuel supply and they need to be refueled very now and then.

These generators are somewhat underpowered as well. They do not provide automatic coverage as a permanent generator does. However, effective generators design is the best choice for areas where power outages are rare and it also cost lesser than permanent ones.

Diesel Powered Generators Design : Diesel-powered standby generators are one of the most powerful generators available on the market. The carefully designed generators need a permanent fuel tank that must be installed with it. This fuel tank must then be filled with the diesel which will power the generator and generate electricity whenever an outage occurs.

However, the major shortcoming to cope with the design with this kind of generators is the supply of fuel during prolonged outages. As the fuel starts to get used up, the tank starts to get empty. Because of this sudden usage of all the fuel, there will be a need for more fuel.

When fuel gets more in demand, the prices go higher up and it can get costly to keep it running for several hours or days in case of a prolonged outage. Our efficient design intimates you timely about the fuel levels so you can plan accordingly to manage the cost and quantity both.

Natural Gas Or Liquid Propane Powered Generators Design : These generators are suitable in which it is to be used faces frequent power breakdowns or outages. As they are connected directly to the fuel supply, there is no worry about having to refuel every now and then.

Natural gas or liquid propane standby generators are the most reliable kind of generators available. The design of these generators requires the connection to the supply line that provides the fuel necessary to power it. They do not require a large fuel tank to be customized and then installed as well, which increases the design multifarious.

However, if the utility company suddenly decides to shut down supply or if the supply system gets damaged, then there is absolutely no way to power the generator. This can be a huge inconvenience to many, but it is important to remember that the chances of this happening are little to none.

Air-Cooled Generators Design  : Most standby generators tend to overheat when they are providing constant power. Our design put into effect to install a cooling system that allows it to protect itself from overheating. One of the most common ways to do this is to place fans within the generator casing that allows it to force air throughout the unit. Cold air is blasted from one end while the hot air is exhausted from the other. This cools it down and prevents overheating.

Liquid-Cooled Generators Design : Some variants use radiator like a system that allows the generator to cool down. Our engineers prepare a special pipe design through which cool liquid flows. The radiator system is similar to that of a car’s. These liquid-cooled generators are able to fend off overheating much more efficiently than other kinds of generators.

Design Process

After the initial deal with representatives of New York Engineers, we immediately start working on the design process. Our teams swarm the site and area to figure out the climate, the number of seasons, the minimum and maximum temperatures throughout the year and so on.

Our teams also vigorously scroll through several research data through which we extract valuable information about the area and environment. Our engineers work out an efficient cost and generator scheme that fits the client’s budget as well as expectation based on that data. Minor as well as major changes can be made at the request of clients as well.

Our skilled team of engineers also readily provides alternatives to our clients who may also look for cheaper or more suitable solutions.

NY Engineers are a team of professional and highly skilled engineers who are always vigilant about their own safety as well as others’. All of our personnel incorporate safety gear and safety instructions in order for the procedure to remain safe and smooth.

Our engineers recommend the use of premium tools and other utilities to safely install all the necessary parts of the generator. Lastly, we configure the cooling system used for the generator and add in all the necessary wiring or elements which are needed to use the generator.
